OUR FAVORITE AZ BANDS

There are a shit load of bands here in AZ. The pool is deep. Fortunately for us we have been lucky enough to hook up with some very excellent bands in the past and we want to take the time to mention some of them because WE think they are the cat’s meow and hopefully you will too.

We present to you Whiskey Six’s Favorite AZ Bands! (In no particular order…)

RAZER [http://www.facebook.com/RazerMusic]

A kick ass ensemble of 5 guys that like to throw down and leave nothing behind. I think we’ve lost a few too many brain cells partying with these guys and make no mistake, we will lose more willingly. They write gargantuan sized riffs laced with amazing vocal melodies all delivered with an old school punk rock attitude. Check em out if you got the balls.

VEX [http://www.facebook.com/vexband]

If you feel you are personally lacking in the inspiration department then look no further. VEX delivers some of the best melodic journeys on the scene. Don’t be surprised if you catch yourself forgetting where you are when checking these guys out, they will take you somewhere else and mesmerize. Melodically penetrating vocals backed by some very talented/top notch musicianship. Deadly combination wouldn’t you say?

BLACK METAL BOX [http://www.facebook.com/BlackMetalBox1

Have you ever tried to stick your head in a vice clamp and slowly tighten down on it? No? … Well if you ever do then you’ll notice a rushed feeling of tension and excitement all at once. Bottle that experience up and you have Black Metal Box. They bring the drama, crunching riffs built on top of drums that blister, laced with attitude that only being from a place that gets to 100 degrees and higher can bring. Check em out and leave the vice clamp at home.

FREQUIS [http://www.facebook.com/Frequis]

There are a lot of female fronted bands out there, … and there are a lot that suck… THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM, Trust Us. Fronted by the fearless & beautiful Cassie Aguiar, Frequis instinctively puts on one of the best live shows in the valley. Musically they penetrate into your subconscious by giving you a full fledged rock show all while injecting a feeling of higher learning. Oh yeah, don’t let Cassie’s calm and cool demeanor fool you, she puts it down with the best of them (man or woman) easily.

And there you have it, our favorite local bands! Of course collectively we have MANY AZ favorites and have yet to play and see alot of them so please consider this list ever-growing. Til the next list comes out… go check these bands out, you won’t regret it!!

$MIKE’S TOP 5

What’s up friends!, MoneyMike here with a chance to share with you a few of my favorite drummers that have put a stamp of influence on me. Since day one I was always intrigued with solid/flamboyant drummers whether it be in their playing style or performance style. In either case these guys taught me how to unload a can of whoop ass on the drums! So I present to you my top 5 “Influenced My Ass!!” drummers of all time!

5). Brad Wilk - Rage Against The Machine

I Love listening to his style of play. Simple yet powerful and compliments the music well. I’ve always been a huge fan of rock and hip hop and Brads playing combines the best of both. Not the most graceful to watch live, but who the fuck cares when you have a beast of a band like these guys. He always opted for a simple kit with HUGE tones. Luv it. (Favorite Recorded Drum Track -  “Bulls on Parade”)

4). Phil Rudd - AC/DC

If you’re a rock drummer and you don’t know who Phil Rudd is then you better get a shovel and bury yourself because you must be dead. He single handedly “Blueprinted” what solid rock drumming should be today. If you can’t pound out a solid four on the floor that comes even close to him and you wanna play drums then go back and practice because you SUCK. (Favorite Recorded Drum Track -  “Highway To Hell”)

3). Clyde Stubblefield – James Brown

Listen to any sampled hip hop, R&B, or rap and you will hear this dude. That drum beat at the end of Anthrax and Public Enemy’s version of “Bring The Noise”? That’s Clyde Stubblefield. The man invented “the Funky Drummer” and I would give my left nut to have his left wrist. He oozed funk and I can honestly say there would probably be no James Brown without him. Google it. (Favorite Recorded Drum Track -  “SuperBad”)

2). Vinnie Paul – Pantera/Hellyeah

There was probably a good portion of my life where I wished I was a 5’5” fat dude who could do with his feet what most guys could only do with their hands. I give you Vinnie Paul. Not only was he waaaay ahead of his time in regards to modern metal drumming but his drums always sounded better than anyone else’s. Go back and listen to “Vulgar Display Of Power” (which was released back in 1992 btw) it sounds just as good as if it were released yesterday. Modern Metal drumming would be nowhere without him. Thank you Big Vin’. (Favorite Recorded Drum Track -  “Mouth For War”)

1). Tommy Lee – Motley Crue

No doubt, hands down, muther fuggin’ kung-fu…, Theeee’ number one reason why I decided to play drums in the first place. He had everything… style, chops, flair, consistency (when not drug induced) showmanship, power and INFLUENCE. Not to mention the first to spin their drumkit in the air leaving a trail of wannabees behind (including myself). His off stage antics have de-railed a lot of what people think he is as a drummer, but there is no doubt in my mind that I can directly follow the long winded lineage back to the first time I picked up stix and envisioned myself playing like him. BOOM. (Favorite Recorded Drum Track -  “Kickstart My Heart”)

And that’s it, my top 5 “Influenced My Ass!!” drummers of all time!

Thanks for readin, NOW GO DRUM!
